"My Dear and Silent Friend"

A Cherokee girl must fight her deepest fears to protect her father Sequoia’s life and support his dreams for the Cherokee people.  Told in Ayoka’s words, “My Dear and Silent Friend”  is the fictionalized account of a young girl’s essential role in shaping history almost two hundred years ago.

Realizing his people’s need for literacy, Sequoia has struggled as long as Ayoka can remember to devise a written version of the Cherokee language.  Unfortunately, her superstitious mother opposes him, siding with others who believe the strange marks are witchcraft–punishable by death.  When Sequoia selects Ayoka to demonstrate his creation before the Council of the Chiefs, she must resist her overbearing mother and jealous brothers, to embark on an exhilarating but treacherous journey through the mountains.  All too soon, she realizes she must fight herself as well.

About  McKemie Huston

Not published – yet.  But I will be.

I wanted to write stories that are exciting and beautiful–my vision of the real world, which I believe is best revealed through fantasy.

To ensure that I would do more than daydream, I committed to write four stories dedicated to each of my four nieces and nephews:   Warren, Wesley, Michelle, and Elizabeth.  (Last book is in the works.)

Then there were five.   Jack was born.   I am in trouble.

About  Terryl L. Paiste

Terryl  Paiste  (as in “glue”) never envisioned writing for children until she discovered a tale that she knew MUST be told. A lifelong writer, Terryl’s works range from fiction to dramas, comedies, and more than a few, annoying letters-to-the-editor. From the start, Terryl specialized in plays for seniors. Always looking ahead, she wanted to ensure good acting roles for “women of experience” (should she ever need a second career).

Teaming with McKemie Huston, Terryl Paiste (as in “glue”) co-authored “My Dear and Silent Friend.” Children’s literature can now be added to her lengthy and varied repertoire.

Terryl’s other works encompass more than 20 plays and monologues, which have been produced on over 100 stages throughout the country and abroad, including: “Welcome to Acceptance” (1990 winner Best Original Play/Washington DC Play Festival), “Unpacking Dominic’s Trunk” (1989 winner Best Original Play/Washington DC Play Festival), “Bronson’s Wife,” “The Revenge of Sacajawea,” “Another of Louella’s Killer Ideas,” “Dumb Stuff,” “A Penny’s Worth of Murder,” “Great Sentimental Value, Big Reward,” “I Sometimes Wish That God Were Back,” and “At the Whim of the World.”
